The Young Person Behind the Programme

It is easy to get caught up in the plans, meetings, activities, attendance lists, and targets that come with youth ministry. We may spend weeks preparing a programme and focus so much on making it successful that we forget the most important part: the young person in front of us.

Youth ministry is not simply about organising good programmes. It is about encountering people.

Behind every young person who walks into a youth meeting is a story. There may be questions they are afraid to ask, struggles they do not know how to express, dreams they are trying to understand, or wounds they have never shared with anyone. Some may come looking for friendship. Others may simply need someone to notice them.

This is why youth ministry requires more than good planning. It requires a listening heart.

Sometimes, the most important thing we can do is pause and ask, “How are you really doing?” Not as a routine question, but with the willingness to listen to the answer.

A successful programme is not only measured by how many people attended, how well the activities went, or how beautiful the event looked. Sometimes, success is one young person feeling seen, welcomed, understood, and reminded that they matter.

As youth ministers, we must learn to look beyond the programme and see the person.

Before we ask, “How did the programme go?” perhaps we should ask, “Who did we encounter?”

May we never become so busy serving young people that we forget to see them.

This week, let us slow down. Listen more. Notice the person who is usually quiet. Check on the one who has stopped attending. Encourage the one who seems discouraged. Create spaces where young people can be themselves, ask questions, and feel valued.

Because at the heart of youth ministry is not the programme.

It is the young person.
